Welcome to Signascan where we want to share our passion of collecting Autographs (Philography) , Memorabilia, and other mostly sports and movie related collecting.
Where do you start your collection? Well perhaps you’ve already started or take a leaf out of my book. I was browsing a flea market downtown when I came across an old hardbound catalog for a long since vanished sports store from 1911. It set me back a quarter!
Intrigued, over the next few years I collected a few more of this type of book, sometimes referred to as ephemera and then that led off to hockey and Baseball Cards, football pennants, movie stuff and then autographs, but these only in a small way, I have a thing about being thought of as a stalker!
I then got to picking up the odd early American postcard and that has led in a small way to vintage greetings cards, particularly for Christmas and thanksgiving and some sent to and from soldiers in World War IIĀ that have to be the most poignant items in all my collection.
You’d be amazed at where you can find some of this stuff as well, flea markets, factory closures (particularly for early advertisements and packaging), some of my best scores have come from simple Craigs list ads where people are clearing a relatives house, ask your local movie theater (particularly if it’s of any age), twice I’ve come away with fairly valuable hauls of 50’s,60’s and 70’s Movie Posters and ads that have never been used and were just collecting dust in a back office!
My collection now takes up my entire basement, some on the walls, some in racks, some in glass cases and unfortunately some is packed away in boxes due to lack of room, but one day it’ll all come out on show together.
I aim to pull together more posts and videos to help as we go on so keep coming back. If you’ve got any hints or tips for other collectors, drop us a line through the Contact Page and we’ll post them up for everyone.
Until then, Good Luck & Great Collecting!
Andy
